What is a bump key, and is my home vulnerable?
A bump key is a specially-cut key that, when tapped, can open standard pin-tumbler locks. Bump-resistant pins or high-security cylinders defeat the technique.
Bumping became famous after a 2005 Dutch documentary. Most builder-grade Kwikset and Schlage locks installed before 2010 are vulnerable.
Modern Schlage B-series, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Abloy, and any lock with security pins or sidebars are bump-resistant. Smart locks with no traditional keyway are immune.
If you're worried, a Mount Pleasant, NC locksmith can swap your existing cylinder for a bump-resistant one for $30–$80 per lock — much cheaper than replacing the whole deadbolt.
